The difference between a diesel skid steer loader and a mini skid steer loader becomes much clearer once the machines leave the showroom.
I remember a landscaping job where the machine spent more time getting into position than doing the actual work. The site was tight, with finished paving on one side and a house on the other. A larger loader had plenty of power, but getting it where it needed to go was the frustrating part. On a site like that, a compact machine can be worth more than another few horsepower.
That does not mean a mini skid steer loader is the better machine in general. Give it a pile of wet soil or a long day of heavy loading and the limits become obvious. A diesel skid steer loader has the weight and hydraulic capability to handle tougher work without feeling like it is being pushed to its limit every few minutes.
The attachment can change the decision, too. A buyer may start with a bucket in mind and later add a trencher, auger, broom, or pallet forks. I have found that checking the hydraulic requirements early saves a lot of trouble. It is disappointing to buy a loader and then discover that the attachment you actually need is a poor match.
Then there is transportation. A mini loader can often be moved between small jobs without turning transport into a separate operation. For a contractor doing several residential jobs in the same week, that convenience adds up. A heavier diesel skid steer loader makes more sense when the machine is expected to stay on a demanding site and earn its keep through heavier work.
So I would not start with the question, “Which loader is more powerful?” I would start with the jobs from the last three months. How often were you working in restricted spaces? How much material were you moving? Which attachments did you actually use?
The answers usually make the choice much easier. A loader should fit the workday you have, not the machine you happen to like on paper.
